Nollywood movies tool for cultural diplomacy- NICO DG

Dr Barclay Ayakoroma, the Executive Secretary, National Institute for Cultural Orientation(NICO) says Nollywood movies should be used as a cultural diplomacy to foster mutual understanding with countries to enhance national development.
Ayakoroma made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, in Abuja.
“Mutual understanding of people from different places leads to better cooperation and this can be achieved with the exchange of cultural ideas, goods and services.
“Cultural exchanges between individuals and even nations involve the projection of our identity through the indigenous languages, dresses, literature, foods, and other expressions that are truly Nigerian to the rest of the world.
“As Nigeria grapples with internal security challenges and seeks regional and economic cooperation from nation-states, it can use the instrumentality of Nollywood to promote the beauty and uniqueness of the country’s physical, geographical and cultural attractions.’’
He said that what the U.S. achieved with Hollywood, the Chinese with its ‘Ping Pong’ culture diplomacy and Israel with religion could be achieved by Nigeria with Nollywood movies.
“Nollywood movies, which have qualities of immediacy, are all encompassing and evoke consciousness are veritable tools of cultural diplomacy that reveal the soul of the country.
“Therefore Nigerian movies must project the beauty of Nigerian’s culture that outsiders need to know for improved understanding, interaction and cooperation.’’
He said that the steps toward the realisation of the above objectives must involve the recognition or respect of cultural differences, understanding of the position or disposition of the other party.

Man arrested for selling pirated Nollywood movies

A 23-year-old man, Eze Obasi, has been arrested for allegedly selling pirated copies of Nollywood movies.

The 23-year-old secondary school leaver was arrested while selling a popular movie, ‘Invasion 1897’, produced by Imasuen Lancelot.

The Ebonyi State indigene was apprehended after the marketer of the movie, Gabriel Okoye of G-Media Limited, caught him selling the movie in traffic.

Obasi, however, denied reproducing the movie, adding that he sold it to make ends meet.

He said, “I came to Lagos in 2011, shortly after I finished my secondary school. My uncle gave me some money to start my own business. I started selling foreign movies which I was getting from Alaba International Market. I started selling local DVDs last year, and I sold them for N100.

“On Tuesday, I was about selling this DVD (Invasion 1897) to someone on a bus at 11am, when I was caught. I sell these DVDs because I need to feed and pay my rent. I also want to further my education.”

Okoye, in his statement to the police, said he had caught the suspect on several occasions and he had been made to sign an undertaking not to sell pirated movies again.

He said, “We have arrested him on two occasions in the past for infringement on the rights of producing such films like ‘October 1’, ‘Phone Swap’ by Kunle Afolayan and ‘Tango with me’ by Mahmod Ali-Balogun, all distributed by G-Media.

“In one of such cases, he wrote an undertaking that he won’t engage in piracy of people’s works.”

The Ojo Police Division arrested the suspect and transferred the matter to the Nigeria Copy Rights Commission.

The movie producer, Imasuen, said he was surprised that pirated copies of his movie had flooded the market.

He said he only gave the exclusive rights for the distribution of the movie to G-Media, adding that he had never had any business transaction with Obasi.

The NCRC arraigned the suspect before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court on three counts of piracy.

The charge read in part, “That you, Eze Obasi, on March 1, 2016, within the Lagos Magisterial District, did make for the purpose of trade or business 177 infringing copies of video CDs titled, ‘Invasion 1897’, in which the copyright subsists in favour of Lancelot Imasuen.”

The prosecution counsel, Mrs. Linda Durugbo, said the offence was punishable under section 20 (1) (2) (a), of the Copyright Act, Cap C28, Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The defendant said he was not guilty of the offence and elected summary trial.

Durugbo asked the court to remand the defendant in prison.

The Chief Magistrate, I.O. Adelaja, however, said the offence was bailable under the law.

“He is therefore, admitted to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum,” she added.

The case was adjourned till April 26, 2015.

How we broke light skin jinx in Nollywood- Uche jumbo

You have been away from the scene for a while, what are you currently working on? We are actually promoting a film by Omoni Oboli, wives on strike. It is about a group of village women who got together to protest about something they thought was wrong and their agitation was successful in their own little way. The women felt that it was wrong for a grown man to want to marry a child. They felt the child needed to be protected and when they voiced out, nothing happened so they decided to go on strike. There are other components in the movie that show that the movie is not fully comic in nature because it passes a strong message to the viewers. I believe it is God that delayed the release of the movie till this time because we shot the movie in 2014. Child’s right act and the protection of the girl child is something people are talking about especially because of the Ese story. The movie is opening people’s eyes because there are so many cases like that but they are swept under the carpet. The movie shows what women can achieve if they come together. It is an advocacy film with comic relief. As a mother how do you feel when you read stories on child marriage? Each time I read about such stories I feel broken. There is the need to protect the girl child in our country. Before I became a woman and a mother, I was a girl child. We don’t need to tell anyone that a child must be protected. The girl child law is there and it should be implement and taken seriously in all states. I don’t think any right thinking person should have a contrary opinion. Let me shock you, the senate recently dropped a bill that would enable gender equality. What is your opinion on this development? I don’t have anything to say to the senate yet because it is sad that they would drop such a bill. They owe it to the people who put them there to actually pass the right bill. I have always known that being a woman means that I should always work twice as hard and I have always encouraged other women to have this same mindset regardless of your profession. Personally, I would want women to excel were men fail. I may sound biased but that is the only way to get ahead in this situation. If you do not pass a bill on gender equality it means that you are in directing telling me that I am a lesser being so I have to work twice as hard. If you have that mindset, you would know that it is an advantage being a woman, because you are a woman means you should succeed. There was a tweet Chioma Chukwuka-Apotha posted where she claimed that people who she thought were her sisters weren’t, somehow you were part of the rant, was it for publicity stunt? I have a publicist and I would want him to earn his pay, I would not make his work easier by creating a publicity stunt. I always tell people, if you are involved in the serious problems facing Nollywood, you will not have time for such rubbish. If you are a Nollywood investor who is thinking about how to sell your content and beat piracy or broaden our distribution network you would not think of such nonsense. Having said that, it was a small misunderstanding blown out of proportion but I like that people saw it as a publicity stunt. That is probably a better version than what really happened. It was a misunderstanding. Chioma Chukwuka-Apotha had an agreement with somebody and it did not go as planned. She did not see herself in the situation she was supposed to be, she said something and someone else reacted and that was it. How has your relationship been with Chioma Chukwuka-Apotha ever since then? We have a very good relationship. I know that the Nigerian media wished we had a beef but the truth is that there is no time for that. There is really no permanent enemy in this industry. I really wish I had the strength for that but I do not. I don’t have that much time on my hands. I wish I was one of those people that would say that they have always wanted to be an actress, but that was not the case with me. I am not one of those people that did not really know what I wanted to do in life. I would say my case was a typical example of opportunity meets favour and also being at the right place at the right time. I went to deliver something for somebody around a place where an audition was taking place. I was mistaken for an actor and I was given a script to read. I read it and I was chosen but I was not paid a dime for the job. So your first job was done for free? Not just my first job, about five other ones I did after that were done for free. At what stage did you begin to earn money from acting? I guess I was just consistent. I was an underdog for a long time and what took some people about a year or two to achieve, it took me about six years to become a household name. The movie, games men play, shot me into the A-list level. How has motherhood been? It is an awesome experience. Nobody prepared me for the kind of love and affection I would have for my child. When I felt saw my child I thought he was switched at birth because he was too fair. When they first gave me my child I looked at him and I was dazed because he was literally white. I wondered whether they had switched my child when my husband was not around but the nurse that was nearby seemed to have read my mind and she told me not to worry that my child would still turn dark after some days. They tell you about the love but nothing really prepares you for it, it is very overwhelming. How did you cope with the changes in your body due to the pregnancy? To me at that point, Mathew’s pregnancy was a miracle because I had given up about getting pregnant. When I realized I was pregnant, I was not really particular about the changes my body was going through; I was more or less scared. I lived in fear for about six months during pregnancy because I was scared of having another miscarriage so it was not really about how I looked. To be honest I really did not care about my looks. Is that why you lashed out at a fan who made comments about your weight on your Instagram page? I would not say I lashed out on anyone; it was more like a ‘no time for nonsense’ reply. It is my page and I can’t say I would not read comment that people post on my page because that is how I interact with my fans. If I go to a blog and read negative comments about me, I can blame it on myself. If you want to post a negative comment about me, go to a blog and do so and not on my page. READ ALSO: Former INEC boss, Professor Jega gets new appointment, find out For two weeks, this person persistently mentioned how fat I am anytime I post a picture as if I do not have a mirror or a scale at home. I know where I am coming from and how hard I have worked to improve on myself so I don’t need such comments on my page. I have never been a slim person in my life. The slimmest I have ever been in my life is a size 8 and I am a size ten right now so how is that a problem. I just need that to stop. If I am promoting a film I expect that you comment on my work, it is my page and I decide what goes on there. So it is not as if I lashed out at a fan, I would say that I did that to reset the person’s brain. Since you were born a fat person, did you decide to shed some weight because of your work? Yes, at the beginning of my career I was a plus sized person but I decided to shed some weight because I knew I needed to stay trim and fit. I had to discipline myself. It was easy because I know my body type. The same way I tell people that when it comes to fashion, you don’t have to dress because the item is invogue, dress based on your body type. That is what I do. I know my body type and I dress according to what suits me. I can never do such because I know how hard I fought to be where I am with my skin colour. Do you know how hard it was for dark skinned actresses to play lead role during the early stages of Nollywood? Then when we have now started playing lead role, I would go and bleach? That is like slapping the faces of people who gave me that opportunity. Back then it was very rare and difficult for dark skinned ladies to play lead role and it is wrong because it is misdirecting the younger ones. I can never bleach my skin. So it was tougher for a dark skinned person to bag a lead role? Initially in the beginning it was. I think Genevieve and Uche Osotule broke that jinx. At that time, that was the norm in Nollywood. They just preferred light skinned people but with time it was no longer about your skin colour but what you can put on the table. Before if you were fair in complexion, even if you cannot act, the role would be given to you and that is why I said that Nollywood is a revolving industry.

Nollywood stars react to Senate’s vote against Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill

Nollywood stars, Stella Damasus and Uche Jombo have reacted to Nigerian Senate’s vote against the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill.

Stella Damasus blasts women who care less about the raging topic and has failed to join in the fight. "They would rather post stupid pictures of their designer outfits and their shopping sprees," she said.

Uche Jombo on her part, called for women to join in the fight and make their voice louder!

Appeal Court affirms Nollywood actress, Ibinabo’s 5-year jail term

Lagos – The Court of Appeal in Lagos on Friday, dismissed an appeal by Nollywood actress Ibinabo Fiberesima challenging a jail term slammed on her by a Lagos High Court. Ibinabo was sentenced to five years imprisonment by Justice Deborah Oluwayemi of a Lagos High Court for reckless driving which the death of a hospital staff. She was alleged to have driven her car recklessly on the Lekki-Epe Expressway and knocked down a man, Giwa Suraj. The deceased was said to be a staff of a Lagos state’s hospital. A Magistrate court (court of first instance) had earlier given the appellant an option of N100,000 fine for the offence. The judgment of the magistrate was,however, set aside by the high court which replaced the option of fine with a jail term. Dissatisfied, Fiberesima had filed an appeal through her lawyer, Mr Nnaemeka Amaechina, urging the court to set aside the five-year sentence. Delivering judgment on Friday, the appellate court dismissed Fiberisima’s appeal and affirmed the decision of the Lagos High Court. In a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Jamilu Yammama Tukur, the court held that the trial Magistrate Court lacked the discretion to have granted Ibinabo an option of fine having been convicted. The court further held that the appeal lacked merit and consequently dismissed it. Other members of the panel are Justice U.I. Ndukwe-Anyanwu (presiding) and Justice Tijani Abubakar. It will be recalled that the appellate court had earlier ordered the appellant to appear before it when judgement was to be delivered. Counsel to the appellant, Amaechina, said the judgment will be challenged at the Supreme Court, adding that a notice of appeal had already been filed. Justice Oluwayemi of the trial court had held that the magistrate exercised “judicial recklessness” when he gave the convict an option of fine. The court noted that the trial Magistrate must have misdirected himself based on the allocutus made by the counsel to the convict that she is a working mother. Oluwayemi had held that Sections 28 of the Traffic Law under which the accused was convicted did not give an option of fine. She held that “when a term of imprisonment is mandatory for an offence the court cannot and should not give an option of fine.” She insisted that the fine did not serve the purpose of justice in the case and subsequently ordered that the N100, 000 be returned to the appellant.

Nollywood actor, Femi Adebayo, who was appointed as Special Assistant on Culture and Tourism to Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed on February 22, 2016, has resumed work this week.

The Jelili actor, took to Instagram yesterday, to announce his resumption by showing off his new office with the caption: ‘Glory be to God….!!! My Office, super cool abi?’ he asked his fans on social media.

Being the latest political appointee, Femi Adebayo has joined the league of Nollywood actors and actresses that have ventured into politics through one appointment or the other.

Recently, Ini Edo was announced as Special Adviser on Tourism to Akwa Ibom state by the executive governor, Emmanuel Udoh, while Kate Henshaw was appointed as Special Adviser, Liason, Lagos by Cross Rivers State governor, Ben Ayade.

Filmmaker speaks on why actors are stereotyped in Nollywood

According to the renowned filmmaker, the Onus is on the actor to look for materials that  stretches and shows his or her range.

Veteran Nollywood award winning filmmaker, Joke Silva,was recently a guest at Pulse Nigeria.

The filmmaker who is popular for screen and stage works like "Violated," "Hear Word," "Widows Cot," "Letters to a Stranger" among others, shared her thoughts on why some Nollywood actors are stereotyped.

According to the renowned filmmaker, the Onus is on the actor to look for materials that  stretches and shows his or her range.

She went further to explain that the issue of stereotyping actors isn't only in Nollywood, but in all film industries.

"For the actor it's a job, and a job is very key for us in our business. Again, it's laziness. It's not only in Nollywood , it happens in all film industries. The Onus is always on the actor to then look for materials that  stretches, that shows the range.

Some actors don't have a range, and it's not a sin. There's nothing wrong in not having a wide range. If you work better maybe because of your  looks, or the texture of your voice , you work better as the bad boy or bad girl, hey, it works, stick to it and get your following.

Nollywood stars for Zim movie

Memory Savanhu

Zimbabwean-born Nollywood actress-cum-producer Memory Savanhu is coming back home this month ahead of her film project to be done here.

The actress is set to shoot her first movie in the country which will feature some of the popular Nigerian actors.

She declined to name the actors in the production but said big names would be part of it.

Savanhu has featured in popular Nigerian movies such as “Lagos Cougars”, “Reloaded” and “One Fine Day” among others.

Among the films she has produced is “Distance Between”, which stars renowned Nollywood personalities such as Rita Dominic, Mercy Johnson and Yemi Blaq.

In an interview in Lagos, Savanhu said preparations are at advanced stage and it will be her dream come true combining forces with Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

“Finally the time is now, for me to shoot the movie I have been longing for.

I will be in Zimbabwe in two weeks time but not staying for long because I also need to go and see my family which is now based in United Kingdom.

I have already written the script and still in negotiating process with some of the most wanted and loved Nigerian actors to fly with me to Zimbabwe and feature in my project,” she said.

She said she will engage local producers and directors.

“I have heard a lot of what is happening in Zimbabwe.

Nigeria's film industry is the largest in Africa and the third largest in the world. The industry is using its weight to support the development of local languages in the country, this comes after the Nigerian Minister of State for Education said the native languages could become extinct.

Over 500 languages have been spoken in Nigeria but at least nine of them are now extinct and many more are endangered, and despite being one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, English was chosen as the official language to maintain the countries unity.

Even the world is feeling the rapid shrinkage of local languages and dialects, prompting the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to dedicate a special day last month to make people conscious of the need to preserve them.

This is one of the many efforts by the country to keep its many languages alive; recently Nigerian born Adebunmi Adeniran designed a mobile keyboard that can be used to write up to 12 of the country’s indigenous languages.

Economists suggest that Nigeria's entertainment industry may the way to diversify promote diversity and remedy the issue.

"There were Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba, even Swahili films nominated, I think it’s wonderful, it shows that there is a huge demand for films that are in indigenous languages and we just need to develop more of the content for that,” said Nollywood Actress, Ego Boyo.

CNBC Africa spoke to actors, actresses and producers at the Africa Magic Viewer's Choice Awards 2016 where they all agreed with the sentiment and explained why the languages arent being spoken anymore.

"Our indigenous culture, it’s so great and it is so healthy and it is so rich and I think we are overlooking it a lot, some people have managed to keep at it and are dogged in indigenous production,” said Katherine Obiang, Nollywood actress.

Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Nollywood actor reckons the problem boils down to one issue he calls “hangover of colonialism”.

“When we were colonised by the British, they brought their own way of life and made Africans believe that our own way of life is inferior and for some people it got into the psyche and they believe that for you to show that you are at par with the West is for you to speak their language and act in a certain manner,” he said.
