Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
Adu, one of the few surviving actors from The Village Headmaster series, passed on in Abeokuta on Sunday, February 28 at the age of 83. In a statement on Tuesday, March 1 Mohammed described the late actor as one who lived an exemplary life. According to The Nation, the minister showered accolades on Adu, calling him one of the very few quintessential artistes of his kind left in his generation. The statement further reads: “He was not only well regarded as an actor, writer and producer but he also stood out for his patriotism and oustanding contributions to the broadcast and motion picture industry, one of the reasons he was honoured with the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) award by the Federal Government.” Mohammed also urged the family of the late veteran to remain strong in this trying time, even as he prayed for God to grant them the strength to bear the loss. Joseph Abiodun Babajide Adue started his adult life as a banker with Central Bank of Nigeria before settling as an actor. The late Jab Adu had an illustrious career on stage, television and film, entertaining Nigerians for years. While with the apex bank, he squeezed out time to participate as an actor and writer in the popular The Village Headmaster TV series in which he played the role of Bassey Okon, the doctor, dispenser and pharmacist of Oja village. He left professional banking in 1970 and went into full time acting, writing and production, earning himself a respected image as one of Nollywood’s legends.
